Fencing as a form of combat is recorded in Egyptian relief carvings as far back as 1190BC. Ancient civilisations including China, Japan, Persia, Babylonia, Greece and Rome practiced swordplay as training for combat, but it wasn't until the Middle Ages that fencing emerged as a sport from Europe.

Both Italy and Germany lay claim to the sporting origins, but it was Henri De Saint-Didier of France who named the major movements and disciplines in 1570.

Fencing is one of the few sports to have been contested at every Olympic Games since making its first appearance in Athens in 1896. Women joined the Olympic fold in 1924. The International Fencing Federation (FIE) was founded in 1913.

Fencing joined the Asian Games programme at the 7th Asian Games Tehran 1974, Iran.
