Diving - History

Old-fashioned divers Diving - History
Diving as it used to be

Historians have suggested diving formed part of the ancient Greek Olympics, but the British were the first to take the sport seriously in the modern era, jumping into ponds in the early 1900s.

Platform diving was an introductory event at the 1904 St Louis Olympic Games with the springboard event introduced in London four years later. Stockholm 1912 saw the first women's platform event staged with the womens springboard introduced in Antwerp in 1920.

Sydney 2002 opened a new stage with the introduction of synchronized diving.

In the past, the success and prominence of Greg Louganis led to American strength internationally. More recently, the greatest diving nation has been China, which came to prominence several decades ago when the sport was revolutionised by national coach Boxi Liang. China has lost few world titles since.
